Calcium is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development. Many plant diseases
are associated with low calcium, and many physical disorders in crops can be attributed
to calcium deficiencies. But, if you recognise the signs of Calcium deficiency,
you can implement effective solutions to reverse the detrimental effects.

## Signs Your Plants Need Help

For those with a keen eye, your plants might be dropping hints that they need more
calcium:

 * **Blossom End Rot:** If you spot dark, sunken spots at the bottom of your tomatoes
in particular, it’s like a red flag for calcium deficiency.
 * **Tip Dieback: **Are the tips of new growth turning brown and crispy? That is
a definite sign of not enough calcium.Tip dieback affects all growing points
of plants from new leaves to the fruit itself (which is a growing point) to the
   tips of roots .
 * **Fruit Colors: **If fruit are not colouring evenly, or colour is not great it
might be time to check in on calcium levels.
 * **Fruit Split: **Fruit that splits generally has weak cell integrity and is prone
   to pathogen attack

### 1. Leaf Analysis

Everything grows from the soil of course and having good levels and well balanced
cations is obvious. However, soil is very dynamic and the uptake of minerals such
as Calcium by plants can be hindered for a variety of reasons from soil that is
too dry or too wet, high levels of other competing cations, low pH etc. To overcome
a Calcium deficiency fast it is crucial to assess the crops’ calcium levels, not
the soil.  A leaf analysis is quick and will show you exactly what minerals your
plants have not been able to access from the soil.

This analysis not only helps identify if your crops lack calcium but also lets you
evaluate how well your fertilisation plan is working overall.  The best time to
take leaf analysis is prior to flowering in all crops that flower, or early in the
growing season for those that do not.  To get accurate results, sample from the
right part of the plant. Opt for fully expanded young leaves and petiole on non-
fruiting terminals, usually the third leaf down from a new growth tip. Choosing
the right leaves is key for getting reliable information about your crops nutrient
status.

Ask us if you need a Balanced Analysis report to understand the results.

### 2. Watering Wisdom:

Regular watering creates an environment where calcium can efficiently travel through
the soil to reach the roots of your plants, particularly under dry conditions. This
is important because calcium plays a pivotal role in maintaining cell structure
ensuring the structural integrity and health of not just the plant but in particular
the fruit.

Timing is everything. Too frequent or excessive watering may lead to waterlogged
soil, also hindering the roots’ ability to take up calcium effectively.

### 3. Calcium Foliar Sprays

Foliar spray technology has come a long way, we now have bioavailable and systemic
calcium products that are fully absorbed through all plant parts to provide a direct
nutrient boost, allowing your crops to quickly, efficiently and effectively metabolise
the calcium, ensuring quality production.

Our Biomin Calcium is a glycine chelated mineral, it is developed by using the smallest
amino acid that chelates the Calcium mineral allowing unhindered uptake and systemic
movement through all plant parts for fast results.

Below are the main benefits to your crops when using BIOMIN Calcium:

 * Correcting Calcium deficiencies FAST
 * Prevents plant and fruit susceptibility to disease and disorders eg _Botrytis,_
Blossom end rot, Tip burn, grape splitting etc
 * Improved produce quality and firmness
 * Reducing and preventing fruit splitting, including grape splitting
 * Improved produce shelf life.
 * Less rejects
 * Increasing overall health and mineral balance of plants.

Calcium supplementation, especially through modern foliar sprays, is crucial for
maintaining the health and productivity of your crops. Regularly checking for signs
of deficiency and taking prompt action can prevent issues like **grape splitting**
and ensure your plants thrive.
