How to improve yield size and quality

Extreme weather conditions including DRY SOILS have seen many vineyard owners have lower than usual yields…

… creating a shortage of desirable Sauvignon Blanc. The soil may have been nutrient-rich, but without moisture, it couldn’t be used by the plant.

Pre flowering and bud initiation are critical times when vines need bio-available foliar nutrition to combat plant deficiencies, which impact yield and quality. Unfortunately, if vines are deficient during bud-initiation, and carbohydrate storage, harvest yield issues will continue to impact next season.

THE BREAKDOWN


“Water status, particularly around flowering, influences bud fruitfulness directly and indirectly, through nutrition. Persistent water stress depresses the fruitfulness of latent buds, affecting the number and size of inflorescence and hormonal balance. This impacts year one’s inflorescence and can reduce bud fruitfulness significantly in year two.

“Carbohydrates play a key role in grapevine reproduction also, as they are a vines main source of energy.  Involved in the initiation of the inflorescence year one, initiation of the flowers on inflorescence in year two, as well as meiosis cell division.

“Phosphorous deficiency can in fact negatively impact three years. If deficient in year one it will decrease bud fruitfulness in season two and reduce floral primordia in season three. Unfortunately Potassium is similar, making it harder for the plant to catch up year on year when minerals are lacking.” – Molly Callaghan, Director

THE PROBLEM

This season’s yield was smaller than usual. If the scenario does not change, the pattern will repeat itself with another small yield next season.

THE SOLUTION

Apply highly bioavailable minerals to address specific deficiencies as soon as possible. Please note applying products that are not highly bioavailable, or minerals you assume to be needed without conducting tissue tests, is not the most effective way to combat deficiencies.
