_Integrated biological and mineral strategies for improved performance and fruit
quality in commercial strawberry production_

Strawberries are a high-value crop with specific nutritional and biological requirements.
Consistent yields, premium fruit quality, and strong market performance depend on
optimising the root zone environment and applying targeted inputs.

This article examines the synergistic role of mycorrhizal fungi, Superzyme, and
boron in enhancing strawberry plant growth and production through improved nutrient
uptake, soil function, and reproductive development.

### Improving soil for strawberry plant growth, through mycorrhizal fungi

Commercial strawberry systems often face challenges with phosphorus availability,
especially in intensively managed or lighter soils and because plants are predominately
planted during the colder months when phosphorus uptake can be a challenge. Mycorrhizal
fungi form a symbiotic relationship with the plant root system, expanding its functional
surface area and increasing the plant’s access to phosphorus in particular, as well
as zinc and other immobile nutrients in the rhizosphere.

**The use of mycorrhizal inoculants at transplanting or during early root development
has been shown to:**

 * Improve early establishment and root branching
 * Enhance nutrient use efficiency, particularly phosphorus
 * Reduce fertiliser inputs through improved soil nutrient scavenging
 * Increase plant resilience to abiotic stress such as drought or soil compaction

**Further to this, data shows inoculation of strawberries with Mycorrhizal fungi
improves the fruit’s physicochemical attributes, increasing pH, soluble solid content,
soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio and phenolic compounds, overall improving
post harvest qualities in strawberries.**

**Mycorrhizal applications are most effective when integrated into soil preparation
or applied directly to the root zone at transplanting.**

### Superzyme: Supporting microbial diversity and root function

Superzyme is a microbial biostimulant containing a consortium of living beneficial
bacteria and fungi. It promotes microbial activity in the rhizosphere and supports
nutrient mineralisation and availability, especially during periods of environmental
stress or low soil biological activity.

In commercial strawberry production, the use of Superzyme contributes to:

 * Improved rhizosphere activity and soil respiration
 * Enhanced root biomass and fine root development
 * Increased access to organically bound nutrients
 * Better crop uniformity and reduced early-season transplant shock

Superzyme is especially useful in soils with reduced microbial diversity or in systems
where regular chemistry use has led to biological suppression.

### Boron support: Critical for reproductive development and calcium mobility

Boron is an essential micronutrient required for flower initiation, pollen viability
and fruit set. In strawberries, boron deficiencies can lead to reduced fruit formation,
uneven development and structural disorders in young tissues. Furthermore, boron
plays a pivotal role in the movement of calcium and other nutrients within the plant,
essential for quality fruit with good shelf life.

Adequate boron nutrition improves:

 * Pollen tube elongation for enhanced flower fertility
 * Translocation of nutrients to developing tissues
 * Fruit uniformity, firmness and shelf stability
 * Resistance to fruit distortion and cracking

Due to its immobility within the plant, boron must be supplied consistently throughout
the flowering season for early fruit development. Foliar applications and fertigation
are common delivery methods in commercial operations. Of course Boron is not the
only mineral that enhances yield and quality and a balanced approach is always recommended
with alternating mineral requirements.

### Integrated approach to growing strawberries

To maximise plant health and fruit production, these tools should be implemented
as part of a holistic strategy that considers soil biology, nutrient balance and
plant developmental stages.

 * Apply mycorrhizal fungi early to establish strong, nutrient-efficient root systems
 * Use Superzyme to support microbial function and nutrient cycling throughout the
season and to help overcome biotic stress.
 * Maintain boron nutrition through targeted foliar or fertigated applications during
   reproductive growth

This integrated approach supports enhanced strawberry plant growth, yield uniformity
and fruit quality, while reducing reliance on synthetic inputs and improving long-
term soil health.

Our team can help you determine the most effective mycorrhizal inoculants, microbial
biostimulants like Superzyme, and boron nutrition solutions for your strawberry
production system. Whether you’re preparing for planting or optimising in-season
performance, we can assist with product selection, timing, and integration into
your current program.
